How BlackBerry Could Have Saved Itself: The 3 Swings They Missed
It's easy to blame Apple and the iPhone on the fall of BlackBerry Smartphones… but I now believe BlackBerry had three more chances to hit home runs that it missed
Happy Friday CrackBerry VIP Fam!
It’s Black Friday, but instead of sending you a bunch of deals I’m helping you save some money - instead of shopping you should read this epic BlackBerry editorial I just published.
I was in BlackBerry's hometown of Waterloo for a few days earlier this month (top secret stuff!) and during my visit caught up with many BlackBerry Alumni. Lots of interesting chats about the good 'ol days and what could have / should have been.
Old habits die hard... so on the flight home I couldn't help but start typing out a vintage CrackBerry-style op-ed on the topic.
Give it a read and let me know what you think!
Tokyo Tips?
I’m flying to Tokyo tomorrow morning for a Clicks launch event we’re holding there next Tuesday. It turns out the Japanese are as crazy for buttons as CrackBerry Kevin is.
It’s my first time visiting Japan, so if you have any tips let me know!
Speaking of Clicks…
The launch of Clicks this year has made 2024 one of the busiest and most memorable years of my life. If I get some downtime during the holidays I’m going to try and write a catch-up piece on the year - there is so much to tell that I think y’all would get a kick out of.
After 15+ years spent writing about tech products, it is just so damn cool to be on the other side actually building them. Our 2025 roadmap is locked down and I love what we’re cooking up in the Clicks Labs for 2026/2027. I don’t want to over-promise and under-deliver, but I think it’s safe to say we have some surprises in store.
So if you are going to buy one thing this Black Friday…
Ok, I lied. I’m a (recovering) Shopaholic, so I’m going to share ONE Black Friday deal to my VIPs.
Whether for yourself or someone you know, this is the biggest sale we’ve offered on the Clicks Keyboard for iPhone this year:
Save $30USD on Clicks for iPhone 14/15
Save $20USD on Clicks for iPhone 16
Buy Multiple Units and Save Even More!
You can even save $30 on Clicks Gift Cards… so if you want to buy them now and spend them next year on upcoming releases, go for it!
The discounts are automatically applied as you Add to Cart.
Until Next Time…
I just realized whenever I type those three words “until next time” what I actually want to type is KEEP FIT AND HAVE FUN… but only the Canadians who grew up with Hal Johnson and Joanne MacLeod of BodyBreak on CBC TV commercials would get that reference (Hmm.. BodyBreak and BlackBerry both have capital B’s in them… maybe that’s a Canadian thing?!).
I’m just going to stop now.
Kevin Out!
Advice: Dont tip the waiters in Japan. It's offensive to them!
Great article Kevin, and indeed it brings back a lot of good memories about how much time each day I spend browsing the forums on Crackberry.
